Shalom EO’s Short-wave infrared (SWIR) Lenses are optimized for operation between 900nm to 1700nm, located in between the Near Infrared (NIR) and the Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) spectra, which is invisible to the human eye. SWIR thermal camera lenses are designed to capture and focus light within this specific wavelength range, unlocking a host of applications and presenting comparable imaging details to visible images. Utilizing the SWIR imaging technologies, our SWIR lenses can unveil what the naked eye can not perceive, allowing bruises and defects to be recognized and identified.
Compared with MWIR (mid-wave infrared) and LWIR (long-wave infrared) lenses, SWIR lenses reveal more image details and better contrast. This is because MWIR and LWIR radiations are emitted from the objects in the form of heat, and MWIR and LWIR thermal lenses form thermal images based on the differentiating the temperatures of the targets, while SWIR radiations interact with objects in a similar manner to visible wavelengths in that the photons are reflected from the object. This reflective nature of SWIR radiation contributes to high-resolution imaging of SWIR lenses. The biggest difference is, that MWIR and LWIR lenses falls in the class of thermal imaging lenses, while SWIR lenses still belong to optical lenses. SWIR lenses also allow for enhanced vision through obscurants such as fog, smoke, and even certain materials like silicon where visible imaging falls short. This is because SWIR imaging can discriminate the purple color, for example, of a grape, into more ingredients and hence show the imperfections of the fruit. SWIR imaging can also penetrate gases and packages, which are impossible under normal light conditions.
