An Achromatic Depolarizer consists of two wedged prisms made of birefringent materials with their fast axes aligned at 45 deg to each other, and one of the prisms is twice as thick as the other. Achromatic depolarizers transform polarized light into a pseudo-polarized state, which means the polarization of the incident beam is randomized rather than being converted into a completely unpolarized state. Light of linear polarization from the broadband light source will have a polarization that is sensitive to both spatial variation and wavelength shifts.

The 45° offset allows the plates to depolarize all input polarization states. Because the plates are wedged, the path length through each birefringent plate varies according to the beam position, and each position on the aperture will have a net birefringence and a final polarization state which is dependent on spatial variations. For a beam of large diameter, the input light will be transformed into unpolarized light.

Hangzhou Shalom EO offers Custom Achromatic Depolarizers made from crystal quartz of cemented structure. The two wedged prisms are assembled with a metal ring in between, and the adhesive is applied outside the clear aperture with caution to ensure unhindered optical transmittance. The distinguished design of the quartz-wedged depolarizers relieves the need to orient the optic axes of the depolarizer at specific angles, which is useful if the depolarizer is used in an application where the initial polarization of the light is unknown or varies with time. We provide two standard sizes:12.7mm and 25.4mm, while other custom specifications could be tailored.
