Lithium niobate crystals have three interesting characteristics. One is that lithium niobate crystal exhibits multiple photoelectric effects, including piezoelectric effect, electro-optic effect, nonlinear optical effect, photorefractive effect, photovoltaic effect, photoelastic effect, and other optoelectronic properties; second, the performance of lithium niobate crystals is highly controllable, which is a result of the lattice structure and abundant defect structures of lithium niobate crystals. Many properties of lithium niobate crystals can be modified through crystal composition, element doping, valence state control, etc. In addition, lithium niobate crystals are rich in raw materials and the crystals feature great availability to high-quality large-size single crystals. These three characteristics in combination contribute to lithium niobate's unrivaled versatility, with the fact that it could be utilized in SAW DEVICES, NLO, EO modulation, and Optical applications.
Optical grade lithium niobate (LiNbO3) wafers are wafers made of lithium niobate with little impurities and defects, which meets the critical requirements for optical applications. LinbO3 has many merits that make them outstanding as optical grade wafers, including high electro-optical and high nonlinear optical coefficients, a wide transmission wavelength range (0.3 - 5 μm), a high index of refraction, and reliable chemical and mechanical stabilities. These traits permit the efficient and precise control of light.
