Polarization Plane Rotator is an excellent substitute for waveplates and retarders which alters light of linear polarization at a specific angle with independence of rotation around its optical axis. This is because polarization plane rotators are made of crystalline quartz which exhibits special optical properties. The cause of these special properties is the unique lattice structure of quartz. Depending on the chain rotation direction, there is “right” and “left” quartz which rotates polarization clockwise or counter-clockwise. The thickness of the polarization plane rotator determines the angles of rotation.
The orientation of the quartz crystals selected to manufacture the polarization plane rotator is c-cut so that no stringent alignment between the polarization plane rotator and the incident beam is needed, the user only needs to ensure that the incident beam is projected perpendicularly to the polarization plane rotator. Polarization plane rotators are, in most circumstances, intended for changing the polarization state of a narrow laser wavelength, and sensitive to ambient temperature to a subtle extent.
